Chapter Ten

A quiet rap on his closed office door made Riley jump. He’d planned to spend the early afternoon catching up on emails, but he found his mind drifting. He lifted his head to see his assistant peering inside. She smiled tentatively, her voice apologetic.

“Mr. Porter-Wright? You have a meeting scheduled for three o’clock and it’s five to. I know you usually leave by now and—”

“Thanks, Anna. I appreciate it. My mind was wandering and I lost track of the time.” He stood, gathering what he needed for the meeting and did his best to focus on work.

By the time the workday ended, though, he was wound tight. He left a large stack of unfinished papers on his desk and too many unanswered emails in his inbox. He’d go into work this weekend if he had to. All he could focus on was what would happen at the apartment that night. Five months into their arrangement with Natalie and he couldn’t get enough.

His groin tightened as he left his office imagining touching Carter, feeling their bodies pressed together. The elevator ride to the parking deck and the drive to his apartment were filled with eager anticipation. It wasn’t until he was sitting in the living room next to Carter on the couch that the tension finally seeped out of his body, his shoulders relaxing and lowering, the stranglehold his expensive silk tie had held him in all day finally loosening.

He sighed in appreciation when he took a sip of his gin and tonic, smiling at Carter over the rim of his glass.

“How was your day?” Carter asked him.

“Long,” he admitted. “I spent all day thinking about tonight.”

Carter grinned. “You weren’t the only one.”

They talked while they sipped their drinks—catching up on their week and venting their frustrations. Riley felt everything slip away from him—the tension with Alex, the stress from work, the pressures from his family all faded while they talked. Although nowhere near drunk by the time he finished his second G&T, he had a mellow buzz. Carter appeared to have a similar buzz—if his relaxed grin after he’d drained his final bourbon was any indication—but he wasn’t drunk, either.

“I’m gonna run out and grab another bottle of bourbon,” Carter said, standing and walking over to the kitchen to deposit his empty glass in the sink.

“Oh, shit, we’re out?” Riley asked, craning his neck to see the bottle where it sat on the kitchen counter.

“Mmhmm,” Carter said, lifting the empty bottle to show Riley.

“I’m sorry. I always try to grab some when I notice it’s getting low,” Riley apologized, standing up. “I guess I’ve had too much on my mind lately to keep track.”

Carter walked over to him, laying a hand on his shoulder. He braced himself, but Carter’s touch was gentle and other than an occasional twinge if he moved wrongly, his shoulder had recovered nicely from the car accident. “You’re too hard on yourself, Ri,” Carter chastised. “You take good care of me—you always have—but you’re allowed to forget things occasionally.
